Commercial Boiler Makes, Models & Manufacturers Discussed by Total Boiler Services

Commercial boilers are mechanical systems that burn combustible fuel or use electricity to run instead. The burners or electric coils inside a commercial boiler generate the heat inside the boiler. The type of commercial boiler you have depends if it generates hot water or steam which circulate through the pipes and radiators of a property. There are a large number of Commercial Boiler Makes & Models and you should always use a Gas Safe Registered business to advise you on the best one for your property and business needs.

Generally, commercial boilers have a higher output range of 70kW plus and this makes them suitable to heat larger properties. In comparison, a domestic boiler will have a smaller output range, which would be between 30kW and 70kW as it doesn’t need as much power to heat a smaller property. A commercial boiler needs pipework over 35mm diameter to ensure it runs efficiently and safely.

The commercial boiler you have or choose for your property will depend on a number of factors including, property size, the type of fuel supply you have, as well as how the hot water and heating is used within your property. You should always use a qualified Gas Safe Engineer to help you with any decision you make when you are choosing between commercial boiler makes & models when upgrading an existing boiler system or installing a completely new boiler. A qualified and experienced gas engineer will have the experience and qualifications to know the type of boiler which will fit in your property to give you the efficiencies, warmth and hot water you need.

How efficient should a Commercial Boiler be?

The EU has released multiple directives to control its carbon footprint to ensure they meet their energy-saving target of 20% by 2020. As a result of this, commercial boiler systems are the focus of new efficiency regulations due to their high energy usage.

The Government’s Energy Act set the timeline out as follows:

  • Landlords of privately rented non-domestic properties cannot grant new tenancies or renew existing ones if their Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is below E as of 1st April 2018
  • Property owners cannot let their building to existing tenants nor allow new lets and renewals if they do not meet the minimum EPC of E as of 1st April 2023 (EPC is an energy-efficient rating (Energy Performance Certificate) and is determined through an energy survey conducted by an accredited Non-Domestic Energy Assessor. Items such as loft insulation, hot water tank, radiators, and commercial boilers are examined and energy efficiency is scored on a scale of A to G, A being the highest and the one in which your energy costs will be the lowest. Recommendations to improve the properties energy rating are recommended by the assessors)

If your commercial boiler’s EPC rating is F or above then it legally has to be replaced as per the Government’s Energy Act which set out the following rules and timescales:

  • Landlords of privately rented non-domestic properties cannot grant new tenancies or renew existing ones if their Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is below E as of 1st April 2018
  • Property owners cannot let their building to existing tenants nor allow new lets and renewals if they do not meet the minimum EPC of E as of 1st April 2023
  • Commercial boilers are now more efficient than ever and if you compare this to an older style boiler much more efficient in their heat and hot water production as well as the cost to run them.

An old commercial boiler system will require more energy to run to provide you with hot water and heating and will cost you significantly more to run. There will also be the increased possibility of them breaking down as well as increased carbon dioxide and monoxide emissions which are highly dangerous.

In summary, by installing a new commercial boiler you can reduce your commercial property’s energy consumption and subsequent energy bills as well as reducing the possibility of boiler breakdowns which can significantly disrupt your business.

What are the signs your commercial boiler needs replacing?

  • Frequent breakdowns and repairs required
  • Boiler switching off and needing to be restarted regularly
  • Property isn’t feeling warm when the heating is on
  • The water temperature isn’t hot or varies in temperature
  • Noises, creaking, humming, buzzing, groaning
  • Your energy bills are increasing
  • Minor leaks can then lead to floods and property damage

How often should a Commercial Boiler be replaced?

A well-maintained and regularly serviced commercial boiler should last between 10 to 15 years plus. It depends on a lot of things but the main one being is how regularly it is serviced, how well it has been installed and if the boiler has the right output for the size of the property it is in. A Gas Engineer will condemn a boiler if it is no longer safe.
